Event Details

Take a step back in time as we visit the childhood home of Ms. Jane Edna Hunter, the founder and general secretary of the Phillis Wheatley Association as well as a nationally recognized advocate for Black working-class women, provider of safe housing for Black women, nurse, attorney, author, and philanthropist.

Our tour will begin at the Woodburn Plantation where Ms. Hunter was born and includes a 30-minute video of her life (produced here in the Upstate with local actors and actresses) as well as a tour of the 4-story plantation home, a replica of Ms. Hunter's childhood home, and interactive hands-on stations that show what life would have been like for a child on the plantation.

Registration required. Contact Youth Services at (864) 260-4500 ext. 158 to ensure your seat.

Please be advised: There is a $10 fee for each attending adult (to be paid at the time of arrival to John from the Historic Pendleton Foundation) and every child must have a responsible adult with them. Due to the nature of this event, we do ask that any children who are not participating (those 5 and under) do not attend.

Keep in mind this is both an indoor and outdoor event, and there will be no heat/air available so dress for the weather. There are four flights of stairs during the tour and no access to an elevator due to the home being built circa 1830, so please keep that in mind when considering whether or not you will visit!

**Please note: the ages for Homeschool Friday are 6 (and in first grade) to age 12.**
