Event Details

For October's Local History Talks meeting, local author and historian, Furman Beck will share with us the fascinating history of Portman Shoals, a once-vibrant settlement now nestled 200 feet beneath the waters of Lake Hartwell. At the heart of its prosperity stood the Portman Shoals Dam, a pivotal structure on the Seneca River. This dam not only shaped the landscape but also played a crucial role in powering the nearby city of Anderson and in its earning of the enduring moniker, "The Electric City."

Discover the story of Portman Shoals, its connection to Anderson's electrifying history, and the enduring legacy it leaves beneath the tranquil waters of Lake Hartwell.

Local History Talks is a program happening on the second Thursday's in February, April, June, August, and October. Our guest speakers will discuss interesting local history topics within the Upstate of South Carolina.
